Autumn Daze/Innocent Crush

Today seemed as fitting as ever to sit down and plan the quilt that's been floating around in my daydreams. I was certainly in my own autumn-induced daze today on my way home from work as I watched the fall color. It felt as though it was changing right before my eyes.

One night last week I was sitting down and browsing some books trying to find some inspiration for my stash of Innocent Crush. When I came across the Autumn Daze quilt by Pauline Smith in Kaffe Fassett's book Quilt Romance. The design spoke to me—and felt like the perfect place to start with the fabric.

However, I've been hesitant to cut into my stash for this one. I'm not sure about the randomness of the placement of the pieces nor about the actual directions and method for constructing the quilt. Seems like it's overly complicated when this is really just half-square triangles and strips alternating with one another and sewn into columns or rows. So, before making the plunge, I thought it was worth the time the do a quick mockup.

I think I like it. I mean, I love the colors and design. I'm just not sure about the randomness of the placement of the pieces. My first attempt at this was simply taking the pattern as it's written and subbing "fabric A" from Innocent Crush for "fabric A" from Kaffe (with one exception which I don't need to detail here). I wonder if I should go back through and rechart which prints go where so that so that the combinations are more pleasing. Or, do I just leave it as is and go with the pattern as it was written . . . oh, for probably the first time ever?

I actually think this really works - I like it! My only thought is the border fabric. The waviness of the large scale print threw me off. Just my opinion =)

Yeah, I kind of feel ya. Looks pretty in person when I'm holding it up that way but I felt it when I looked at it mocked up as well. I guess, maybe, I'm just not really a border person to begin with. I'll let this part be decided after I've finished the rest . . .
